로알드 달 (Roald Dahl) 노르웨이 출신의 부모 밑에서 1916년 10월 13일에 영국 웨일즈의 릴란도프에서 태어났습니다. 아버지는 일찍 돌아가시고 로알드 달은 홀어머니 밑에서 4명의 여자형제들과 자랐습니다. 그의 어린 시절과 젊은 시절의 추억은 인생 전반기의 자서전 "Boy"에 실려 있습니다.
그는 1942년 작가 포레스터를 만나면서 영향을 받아 글을 쓰기 시작했습니다. 첫 작품은 <리비아 너머의 공습>라는 제목으로 익명으로 출간되었고, 1943년에 어린이책을 쓰는 데 그 첫 작품은 우리가 영화로도 많이 알고 있는 "그렘린"입니다.
로알드 달은 헐리우드와 브로드웨이에서 여배우로 활동한 첫번째 부인 페트리샤 닐과 1053년 결혼을 했고, 그녀와의 사이에서 낳은 아이들이 잠자리에 들기 전에 들려주던 이야기들을 책으로 발표했습니다. 그가 쓴 명작들은 영국과 미국에서 엄청난 성공을 거둡니다.
1990년 골수 이형성 빈혈이라는 희귀병을 진단받은 로알드 달은 1990년 11월 23일 74세의 나이로 세상을 떠나는 순간까지도 아이들을 위한 책을 집필했습니다.
